Kids in the Kitchen
Overview Thank You to our Sponsors!

The Junior League of Cincinnati’s
2009-2011 Signature Project

Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen is an Association-wide initiative of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) designed to help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Junior Leagues in over 225 communities in four countries are committed to improving the health of today’s youth by empowering them to make choices that lead to healthy lifestyles. The initiative demonstrates the power of voluntarism to address community needs on both the grassroots and international levels.

The Kids in the Kitchen Spring Event was one of CANDO’s major undertakings for the past few years. Building on those past successes, The Junior League of Cincinnati has made a major commitment to the project by expanding its scope. We have a number of exciting volunteer offerings for members throughout the League to be involved.

Parent Testimonial (February 2010)
I wanted to share with you that earlier in the week Amelia (3rd grade student at PRMS) told us
that she wanted to make Fresh-Fruit Kebabs as she had learned in Kids in the Kitchen. We wrote down all the ingredients that she outlined for us. She also added her own touch - she wanted to put dates in
also. Last night she prepared a beautiful display of fruit to go with our dinner, including dates. I asked her why she chose to add dates to the mix, and she said she tasted them at school in the classroom (as part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant).

I thought you might like to see how everything you each do, to make experiences available to our children, really does find its realization in those children, and here is one example. For this one
small thing to happen so many pieces had to be put into place, and I am grateful for the all the hard work that has brought us to this place.

Sincerely,
Ruth Anne (PRMS parent)

Done in a Day Onsite Presentations
Kids in the Kitchen has developed a mobile presentation designed for schools and youth organizations with a special emphasis on community outreach to the underserved populations. Junior League volunteers who are interested in being presenters are partnered with a member of the Kids in the Kitchen committee. Presenters receive a kit with supplies like paper towels and utensils, 11 official KITK recipes from which to choose for the demonstration and a budget of $20 for food. There are also a number of age-appropriate activity sheets from the national organization, small prizes and a leave-behind for each recipe available. So, the presentation may be personalized for any group.

Photographers are needed to capture the presentations and events for PR, grant applications and JLC publications. KITK is also seeking Nutritionists, Dieticians, Personal Trainers and Chefs.

Contact the Kids in the Kitchen Committee at KITKJLC@yahoo.com to volunteer!

Too busy for a hands-on experience but still want to be involved? To find out ways in which you can help KITK financially, please email KITKJLC@yahoo.com with your inquiry.

Pleasant Ridge Montessori School - Our school partner
5945 Montgomery Road; Cincinnati, OH 45213

Kids in the Kitchen is conducting monthly cooking classes in the evening for students and their parents at the school. Junior League chefs and Cincinnati chefs demonstrate the preparation of healthy dishes while Kids in the Kitchen provides recipes and activities for the students. Junior League volunteers aid the chef and guide the accompanying kitchen work and craft tables.

Gardening on the school grounds is another Kids in the Kitchen project. Pleasant Ridge currently has a small vegetable garden plot begun with the help of Xavier University. Green thumbs will have to opportunity to work with students and teachers to plan and enlarge the sustainable garden in the Spring.
